Outdoor lighting has to survive rain, temperature swings, salt if you are near the coast and UV that fades unprotected finishes in a season. The right fixture is not an indoor lamp moved outside, it is a purpose-built piece rated for weather, and using an indoor fixture on a terrace is a warranty and safety problem.

The IP rating tells you how well a fixture is sealed against water and dust. For a covered porch or a loggia protected from direct rain, IP44 is enough. For a terrace or a garden wall directly exposed to rain, use IP54 or higher. For fixtures at ground level, next to a pool or on a walkway where water can pool, IP65 is the minimum, and for anything submerged in a fountain or a pool, only IP67 or IP68 will do. Coastal properties want a marine-grade specification on top, because salt corrodes standard powder coat within a couple of seasons.

Beyond IP, the practical rules are warm 2700 to 3000 K LED with 90+ CRI so the garden reads honest at night, dimmable if the fixture doubles as ambient light on the terrace, and glare-controlled optics on any path or ground light so guests do not walk into a bright spot.

Outdoor lighting is really four different jobs stacked on top of each other, and the mistake in most gardens is picking one fixture and hoping it covers everything. There are four canonical positions and each has a right answer.

• Wall lanterns at the entrance and along the facade. The most-visible outdoor fixture. A pair of matched outdoor wall lights flanking the front door at 180 to 200 cm from the ground gives the house its evening face. On a long facade, repeat the same lantern every 3 to 4 metres so the wall reads rhythmic and not spotty.
• Path and bollard lights along the walkway. The functional layer. Low outdoor path lights at 40 to 80 cm high placed every 2 to 3 metres along the garden route guide guests without blinding them. Ground-recessed uplights work under trees and along the driveway edge, where a bollard would visually interrupt the planting.
• Pendants over the outdoor dining table. The atmosphere layer. A weather-rated outdoor pendant hung 75 to 90 cm above an outdoor dining table (or a small cluster over a long table) turns a garden dinner into an interior. Use IP54 minimum under a pergola, IP65 if any side is fully open.
• Outdoor chandelier over a covered lounge. The statement layer. A wet-rated outdoor chandelier centred over a covered terrace or a poolside pavilion sets the tone the way an indoor chandelier does over a dining room, and is the single strongest visual anchor for a large outdoor room.

The right plan uses two or three of these in combination, not all four together. Wall + path is the entry-level pair; wall + path + pendant is the terrace kit; adding an outdoor chandelier is what turns an outdoor room into a project.

An outdoor lighting plan is built by zone, not by fixture. The mistake is to look at a garden and think in terms of lamps; the professional move is to look at a garden and think in terms of scenes that turn on together in the evening.

Zone 1, the entrance. The first light guests see. Use a pair of outdoor wall lanterns flanking the front door at 180 to 200 cm, plus a low bollard or a couple of path lights guiding the last few metres from the driveway. Keep this scene on a photocell or on a permanent evening timer, because it is also the security scene.

Zone 2, the outdoor dining and lounge on the terrace. The scene you actually use. Hang a wet-rated outdoor pendant 75 to 90 cm above the table, add a discreet wall spot, and warm ambient from a small outdoor chandelier or a cluster of pendants over the sofa area. Put this scene on a dimmer and split the switch between dining light and lounge light.

Zone 3, the garden itself. The scene you look at, not the scene you sit in. Ground-recessed uplights aimed at two or three tree trunks give a garden depth at night, low path lights outline the edge of the lawn and a wet-rated pendant or lantern over the pergola centres the layout. Skip lighting the flat lawn, it reads as an empty parking lot.

Outdoor exposure is the harshest test a fixture can face. Sun bleaches, rain corrodes, frost cracks, salt eats standard finishes in one coastal season. The roster we curate for outdoor is not the same as for indoor spaces, precisely because some finishes hold up and others fail predictably.

Marine-grade brass and bronze. The gold standard for coastal and salt-exposed sites. The Visual Comfort outdoor range in solid brass and bronze patinates over the years into a living finish without losing structural integrity, and carries a wet-rated seal from factory. This is the finish we recommend for seaside villas, lakeside houses and any site within 10 km of the Mediterranean coast.

Powder-coated aluminium. The lightweight all-rounder. Powder-coated aluminium wall lanterns and pendants from Quintiesse resist rain and UV well, weigh less than brass so mount easily on masonry, and come in modern matte black, anthracite and off-white that read contemporary against stone and render.

Blown and cased glass with wet gaskets. Murano and blown glass from Vistosi and Italian ateliers work outdoors in wet-rated bodies with proper gaskets and drip loops. Frosted diffusers soften the light on a pergola without turning the terrace into a stadium.

Teak, powder-coated steel and rope for outdoor furniture. The Skyline Design collection is built around teak, powder-coated steel, marine-grade aluminium and outdoor rope. Teak silvers into a warm grey over one season and is the reference material for outdoor sofas and dining chairs; the powder-coated steel frames carry a 5-year corrosion warranty in the Skyline programme.

What we do not recommend for outdoors: raw iron (rusts within a season), untreated wood other than teak (warps and cracks), paper or fabric shades (absorb rain), leather (dries out and cracks), plain chrome (pits in salt air). If a fixture uses any of those, we place it strictly under a covered loggia, not in the open.

The two outdoor spaces need different plans, and treating them the same is the fastest way to overspend on the balcony and underspend on the garden.

Small city balcony, 4 to 8 m². One functional layer plus one atmosphere piece is enough. A single wet-rated outdoor wall light at 180 cm next to the balcony door, plus a compact outdoor pendant or a portable outdoor lantern on a small bistro table, covers the whole space. Skip the path lights, skip the outdoor chandelier, skip the recessed ground uplights. Warm 2700 K, dimmable if the switch inside the flat allows it, and one small piece of Skyline outdoor furniture, typically a compact loveseat or two dining chairs, is more than enough furniture for the surface.

Full garden terrace, 40 to 120 m². Three layers, sometimes four. Wall lanterns on the facade and on garden walls, path lights and recessed uplights across the walkways and trees, at least one wet-rated pendant or outdoor chandelier over the terrace dining table, and a warm ambient layer from smaller sconces on the loggia columns and around the outdoor lounge area. Furniture at this scale is a set, not a piece: a Skyline outdoor sofa configuration around a low table for the lounge, and a Skyline outdoor dining table with matching chairs under a pergola for the meal scene.

The difference is not just budget. A balcony asks for one strong choice; a garden terrace asks for a plan that reads as one designed outdoor room, not five random fixtures. Both need proper IP rating from the outset, because the cost of retrofitting a wrong-rated fixture after a rainy summer is much higher than choosing correctly on day one.

Outdoor is a specification-heavy category, and the practical side of ordering matters as much as the design side, because the wrong shipping choice on a heavy dining set costs more than the fixture itself.
